K9 Operational Emergency Medical Support – 1st Aid & Trauma Course with Simon G Newbery (Veterinary Surgeon)

We have the pleasure of hosting a full day K9 Operational Emergency Trauma 1st Aid workshop with Veterinary Surgeon, Simon G Newbery (BVetMed). This course is usually only available to working dog handlers from Search & Rescue (SAR) teams, police and military both in the UK and USA. Simon will cover a variety a wide variety of skills from assessing your dog’s normal/baseline physical condition, first aid through to realistic scenarios using ‘K9 Veterinary Training Mannikin ‘Jerry’’. Prepare for the unexpected!

This course is highly recommended for people who work with and train dogs.

Simon has been a Veterinary Surgeon for over 30 years; is a Veterinary Forensic Consultant; NPIA/SOCA/NCA Veterinary Forensic Advisor and teaches K9 Operational Emergency Medical Support Training for Law Enforcement and Security Dog Handlers.

What will be covered in the course?

  • How do I prepare and protect my dog for deploying? Personal protection equipment for dogs
  • What medical planning risk assessment do I need to do? Veterinary medical threat assessment
  • What kit should I have and how do I pack it? Canine Individual First Aid Kits (K9IFAKs) and their contents
  • How do I know if my canine is normal or abnormal before I deploy? Routine check lists
  • How do I assess my dog’s vital stats in the field? Temperature, pulse, respiratory rates, capillary refill and pupillary signs, dehydration.
  • How do I resuscitate a canine? Canine Rescue breathing and CPR
  • How do I prioritise my examination of the injured dog? MARCHON
  • What other acronyms are useful and what do they mean? HEENT, PAWS, MIST.
  • How do I deal with massive bleeding, what’s new, what’s best? Bandages, clotting agents and tourniquets.
  • How do I put on a dressing and bandage safely? How to use dressings safely and how to improvise
  • How do I deal with some specific wounds? Specific Chest, abdominal, leg and head injuries, using splints
  • How do I deal with environmental injuries? Hypothermia, hyperthermia, frostbite and drowning
  • Dealing with a road traffic accident scenario
  • What if my dog gets poisoned or contaminated? Decontamination and treatment regimes, for contact and ingestion of poisons
  • Some miscellaneous conditions bloat, adder bites
  • How do I package and transport my injured canine?
  • How can I get the most out of my veterinary surgeon?
